The Maritime Heritage Foundation (MHF/SME) was founded as a private initiative in 1997 by F.W. van Gelder

F.W. van Gelder was the foundation’s first Chairman until 2023 and provided the initial funds for the foundation to commence its activities. The SME finances its activities through the private funds of its board members and the sale of the prints.

The MHF/SME is proud to say, that its prints have found their way to the homes of many a veteran, their families and relatives, as well as many enthusiasts. Our prints are also to be found at various Government Services and Departments, like HM Embassy in London, Shore Establishments of the Royal Netherlands Navy as well as barracks of the Royal Netherlands Marine Corps, Military Museums like the ‘Kazemattenmuseum’ in Kornwerderzand, the National Military Museum in Soesterberg and the Royal Marines Museum in Portsmouth.

Furthermore, one of the prints has found a place on board of HNLMS Rotterdam and the oil painting of ‘The Battle in the Java Sea, February 27, 1942’, (Project No.6) decorates the bulwark opposite the desk of the Captain of HNLMS Karel Doorman. A print of the ‘Landing at Pasir Poetih’ is on display at the ‘Ereveld Kembang Kuning’ in Surabaya, Indonesia.

All this would not have been possible without the much appreciated help and immense support of – first of all – the above mentioned veterans and their families; the Royal Netherlands Navy and the Royal Netherlands Marine Corps; the Karel Doorman Foundation in The Hague; the Korps Commando Troepen; the Embassies of the United Kingdom and the United States in the Netherlands; various Dutch Chargés d’Affaires “At the Court of St. James” and their helpful Staff; Drukkerij Bakker & Zn. in Roelofarendsveen, the Military Gallery in Bath (UK), the Association of Bearers of Military Bravery Awards and its predecessor the “Association Bearers Bronzen Leeuw en Bronzen Kruis” and last but not least the maritime artists Robert Taylor, Fred Boom and the sadly greatly missed Peter J. Sterkenburg.

It has been an extraordinary privilege and inspiration to have met the veterans and their families. We are humbled by the personal friendships we were so fortunate to have made. Listening to their stories has been a huge privilege and pleasure.
