Lithographs of Dutch maritime heritage

Signed by the veterans who participated in the relevant actions

In the late 1990s, there were still many veterans in the Netherlands who had been involved in Naval and Marine Corps actions during and after the Second World War.

The MHF/SME decided to honour these veterans and thank them for their service and sacrifice by publishing a series of Limited Edition prints of the actions these  veterans had been involved in.

The MHF/SME tries to achieve its objectives by selecting, in consultation with the relevant veterans, representative combat actions in which the Royal Netherlands Navy and the Royal Netherlands Marine Corps, as well as their Friends and Allies, the Royal Navy and Royal Marines, have been involved in. In later projects, actions involving veterans of the Royal Netherlands Army and Air Force were included as well.

Once the actions had been selected a maritime artist was approached who turned these stories into attractive oil paintings.

These oil paintings are followed by a limited edition of about 100 – 400 prints, whereby each print is signed in the white contour border by the veterans as well as the artist. In this context the MHF/SME always strives to give the projects an ‘All Ranks’-character and includes also  recipients of bravery awards, where possible.

Finally, brief biographies (Curriculum Vitae) of the signatories are drawn up, which are added to each print. By adding these biographies  the MHF/SME aims to create a ‘trait d ’union’ between the actions depicted and the individual histories and experiences of the veterans involved, in order to immortalise their accomplishments.

The MHF/SME is proud to say, that its prints have found their way to the homes of many a veteran, their families and relatives, as well as many enthusiasts.

We would like to stress, that it has been an extraordinary privilege and inspiration to have met the veterans and their families. We are humbled by the personal friendships we were so fortunate to have made. Listening to their stories has been a huge privilege and pleasure.
